PLS-SEM in privacy studies

Title:
Use of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) in Privacy and Disclosure Research on Social Network Sites: A Systematic Review (non-funded)

Project description:

This project focuses on the application of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) in the context of privacy and disclosure research on Social Network Sites (SNSs). Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) is a widely used statistical technique in various fields, including Information Systems, due to its flexibility and predictive power. However, there was a noticeable lack of comprehensive guidelines for applying PLS-SEM in the emerging field of Behavioral Information Security, particularly in studies related to privacy and disclosure on SNSs.

The study aims to bridge this gap by providing a detailed guide on using PLS-SEM in privacy and disclosure research on SNSs. Data was collected from 21 papers published between 2006 and 2022, sourced from prominent scholarly databases including Google Scholar, the Association for Information Systems eLibrary (AISeL), IEEE Xplore, and Science Direct. The systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines, ensuring a thorough analysis and synthesis of the current state of research in this domain.

The review covers key aspects such as data characteristics, reasons for using PLS-SEM, evaluation of measurement models, evaluation of the structural model, and best practices in reporting. Based on these findings, the study proposes comprehensive guidelines for the use of PLS-SEM in Behavioral Information Security research, with a specific focus on privacy and disclosure on SNSs. These guidelines are also applicable to other fields where PLS-SEM is utilised.

Published research:

The findings from this systematic review have been published in a peer-reviewed article titled “Use of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) in Privacy and Disclosure Research on Social Network Sites: A Systematic Review,” available through ScienceDirect. This publication offers a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners looking to apply PLS-SEM in their studies, particularly within the Behavioral Information Security discipline.
